History of AC Milan
AC Milan, also known as the Rossoneri due to its iconic red and black colours, was founded in 1899 by a group of English expatriates. The club quickly established itself as one of the leading forces in Italian football. Shortly after its formation, AC Milan won several regional titles, but it was not until the early 20th century that it began to make its mark on the national stage. The club won its first Scudetto – the name of the Italian league – in 1901, followed by several more titles in the years that followed. In 1986, the arrival of the famous businessman Berlusconi took the Italian club to a whole new level. The club won two Serie A titles, as well as two consecutive Champions League titles in 1989 and 1990. Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi and Marco van Basten all played a major part in the club’s success during this period. In 1994, the Milan-based club achieved a historic treble by winning the league, the Coppa Italia and another Champions League title. Under the management of Carlo Ancelotti, AC Milan returned to success in the early 2000s. The club won two further Champions League titles in 2003 and 2007, cementing its reputation as a giant of European football.
AC Milan’s honours and key statistics
AC Milan boasts a rich history of honours. On the European stage, the club has won the Champions League seven times. At national level, the Rossoneri have won 19 Scudetti, five Coppa Italia titles and seven Italian Super Cups. Paolo Maldini, a true club icon, is the player with the most appearances in AC Milan’s history. The Swede Gunnar Nordahl is the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, having netted over 200 goals in an AC Milan shirt.
