A football shirt is much more than just a piece of clothing: it’s a symbol. It represents passion, a sense of belonging to a club, and sometimes even a generation. Every season, clubs unveil new adult kits as well as children’s kits, and fans from all over the world snap them up.
Wearing your favourite team’s shirt is a way of proudly showing where you stand. Whether it’s PSG, Real Madrid, Marseille or Manchester City, every shirt tells a story – that of a club, a city or a culture.
Before you treat yourself to the latest kit, it’s important to fully understand the differences between the available versions.
🔍 Authentic and replica shirts: what’s the difference?
An essential point to bear in mind before buying: there are two official versions of the shirts:
Authentic jersey
- This is the version worn by professional players
- Made using advanced textile technologies
- Designed for performance on the pitch
- More expensive, often around €130–150
- Meticulous attention to detail: heat-sealed logos, technical fabric, a more form-fitting cut
Replica shirt
- Designed for fans
- Slightly thicker and more comfortable for everyday wear
- Standard fit, with embroidered or sewn-on logos
- More affordable, often around €80–90
- Visually very similar to the authentic version
👕 Home, away and third kits: which one to choose?
Each club usually offers three versions of their kits for each season:
Home shirt
- This is the main shirt, often featuring the club’s traditional colours. It is worn during home matches.
Away kit
- Used when the team plays away, it usually features alternative colours to avoid confusion with the opposing team.
Away kit (or ‘third kit’)
- More creative and often bolder in design, this is intended for special occasions (European matches, celebrations, marketing campaigns). It is often the one that attracts the most attention in terms of design.
These kits are not just matchday outfits: they are designed to appeal to supporters and define the club’s identity each season.
🌍 The football shirt: now a fashion statement in its own right
Clubs are balancing a respect for their historic colours with stylistic innovation. Some opt for a return to their roots, whilst others have no qualms about breaking the mould with bold designs. At the same time, major brands such as Nike, Adidas, Puma and New Balance are constantly innovating with technologies – such as those used in football boots – to optimise performance and comfort.
Today, football shirts are just as much a feature in the stands as they are on the high street. Streetwear, lifestyle, collaborations with designers or artists… Shirts are moving beyond the purely sporting sphere to become fashion statements. The‘vintage jersey’ style is all the rage, with jerseys from the 1990s and 2000s becoming highly sought-after items.
