History of Real Sociedad
Real Sociedad de Fútbol, commonly known as Real Sociedad or simply La Real, is a Spanish football club based in San Sebastián, in the Basque Country. It is the football section of a multi-sport club of the same name, founded in 1909. Real Sociedad’s humble beginnings saw the club compete in the regional divisions of Spanish football. However, its rapid rise began in the 1920s, when the club started to compete at national level. Real Sociedad’s true golden age began in the 1980s. Under the management of British coach John Toshack, the club won two La Liga titles in 1981 and 1982, as well as two Spanish Cups. This period was characterised by a talented squad, featuring legendary players such as Roberto López Ufarte, Jesús María Zamora, and, of course, the famous goalkeeper Luis Arconada. After a period of decline, the club managed to return to the top flight of Spanish football in 2010, securing promotion to mark the club’s centenary. Antoine Griezmann would come into his own the following season and, over time, become a ‘fan favourite’ before moving on to Atlético Madrid. Today, the Basque club has managed to maintain a consistent level under the leadership of Imanol Alguacil, enabling it to remain at the very top of Spanish football.
Real Sociedad’s honours
Real Sociedad’s honours list pales in comparison to that of Real Madrid or FC Barcelona, giants of Spain and Europe. However, the club does have a few titles to its name. Twice Spanish champions, the club has also won the Spanish Cup three times and the Super Cup in 1982. Alberto Gorriz is the player who has made the most appearances for Real Sociedad, whilst Jesús María Satrustegui is the Basque club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 163 goals.
