Founded in 1932, the Zaragoza club has continued to grow over the years. Bolstered by a generation of talented players, the club enjoyed a successful start. In 1957, the club, which had previously played at the Torrero stadium, played its first match at its new home, La Romareda. The years that followed were a success for the Spanish club, which made some major signings in the transfer market. This enabled Real Zaragoza to win its first trophies. In 1964, the club won its first Spanish Cup by beating Atlético Madrid in the final. That same year, the Aragonese side won the Fairs Cup – the forerunner to the UEFA Cup – by defeating Valencia CF in the final at the Camp Nou in Barcelona.

The arrival of a young manager, 30-year-old Víctor Fernández, brought a new lease of life to the Spanish club. Having avoided relegation in the 1990–91 season, the club began to turn things around under the guidance of this new manager. Zaragoza reached the Copa del Rey final in 1993 against Real Madrid but lost by two goals. The following year, the club once again reached the final, this time against Celta Vigo. The Blanquillos went on to win that final on penalties. In 1995, Zaragoza won the Cup Winners’ Cup, beating English side Arsenal after extra time. This title marked the high point for Victor Fernandez’s team; he left his post the following year.
