FC Porto was founded in 1893 in Porto, Portugal. Initially, the club focused mainly on other sports, but football quickly became its main activity, attracting local talent and laying the foundations for what was to become one of the country’s most prestigious clubs. In the 1980s, FC Porto took a giant leap forward with the arrival of Pinto da Costa as chairman. Indeed, the club went on to enjoy a meteoric rise both nationally and in Europe. In 1984, the Portuguese club reached the final of the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Unfortunately for Porto fans, the team lost to Juventus of Turin. Three years later, thanks to a victory in the European Cup final against Bayern Munich, the club lifted its first European trophy. In 2000, the club expanded further with the creation of a youth academy and a new stadium to mark Euro 2004. Under the management of José Mourinho, the early 2000s proved to be a real success for FC Porto. First, in 2003, the club won the UEFA Cup, then the following year the Champions League against the famous French club, AS Monaco. The club achieved the exceptional feat of winning four consecutive league titles between 2006 and 2009.

FC Porto is one of Portugal’s most successful clubs, rivalling Sporting Portugal and Benfica Lisbon. The club has won 30 Portuguese league titles, 19 Portuguese Cups and two Champions Leagues. João Pinto is the player with the most appearances in the club’s history, having played 587 matches in the ‘Azuis e Brancos’ shirt. The all-time leading goalscorer for FC Porto is Fernando Gomes with 355 goals.
