Football Club de Nantes is a French football club founded in Nantes in 1943 by Jean Le Guillou and Marcel Saupin, following the merger of various Nantes-based clubs with the aim of joining the elite of French football. The club achieved professional status in 1945 and joined the second division, where it remained for a long time without managing to gain promotion to the top flight of French football. It was in 1963 that the yellow and greens finally managed to reach the top flight of national football, much to the delight of their supporters. In 1965, FC Nantes were crowned French champions and rounded off their honours that year with a victory in the Coupe de la Ligue. The following season, the club cemented their dominance by winning the French league title once again. FC Nantes developed a dynamic style of football that came to be known as ‘Nantes-style football’. After experiencing financial difficulties in the 1990s, FC Nantes decided to put its faith in players who had come through the club’s own youth system. With a young squad that was technically gifted and physically strong, the Nantes side dominated the 1995 French league and managed to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League the following year. After a difficult period both on and off the pitch between 2005 and 2013, the club managed to regain a degree of stability, enabling it to remain in Ligue 1 to this day.

FC Nantes’ trophy cabinet remains one of the most well-stocked in French football. With eight French league titles, four French Cups and three Champions’ Cups to its name, the club has left its mark on the national game. Philippe Gondet is currently the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 146 goals. The player with the most appearances in the yellow and green shirt is Jean-Paul Bertrand-Demanes, with 650 matches to his name.
