Chelsea, the famous English club based in London, was founded in 1905. Just two years after its creation, the club reached the top flight. The club then went through a series of ups and downs before entering a new era following its takeover. Indeed, in 2003, Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich invested 140 million pounds to turn Chelsea into one of the world’s greatest clubs. The first season of this new era was a success, with a second-place finish in the league and a creditable run in the Champions League. In the summer of 2004, the club’s owner redoubled his efforts and brought in José Mourinho, who had recently won the Champions League with FC Porto. Success was immediate, with a domestic double of the FA Cup and the league title. However, the goal of winning the Champions League remained unachieved. It was not until the 2007/2008 season that the club managed to reach the Champions League final. Unfortunately for the Blues, the result was a defeat on penalties against Manchester United. In 2012, the club reached the Champions League final once again, where they faced Bayern Munich. With the match taking place at the famous German club’s ground, it looked set to be a tough encounter for Chelsea. However, following a rather dramatic turn of events, the English club won their first Champions League title.

Chelsea’s honours list is impressive. With two Champions League titles, six Premier League titles and five League Cups, the club is one of the most successful in England. Franck Lampard is currently the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 211 goals. The player to have made the most appearances for the Blues is Ron Harris.
