Celta Vigo was founded in 1923 following the merger of Real Fortuna FC and Vigo SC. Initially, the club was known as Club Celta before adopting its current name in 1936. The club’s golden age spanned the 1990s through to the 2000s. After winning the second-tier league title in 1992, the club gained promotion to the top flight of Spanish football. The arrival of new players enabled the club to aim for survival in the top flight, which was secured with a fifteenth-place finish in the league. That same season, the club managed to reach the final of the Copa del Rey, where they faced Real Zaragoza. Unfortunately for all Celta supporters, the club lost on penalties. The 1997–98 season was a great success on the sporting front, as Celta finished sixth in the league, a significant position that secured qualification for the Europa League. For two consecutive years, the Galician club was knocked out of the competition by French sides, Olympique de Marseille and RC Lens. The 2002/2003 season remains one of the Spanish club’s finest. Finishing fourth in the league, the club qualified for the Champions League for the first time in its history. The team were knocked out in the round of 16 by the English side Arsenal.

The club has won the Spanish second division title three times. Celta Vigo has had mixed fortunes in the Spanish Cup, reaching the final three times without ever lifting the trophy. At European level, the club’s best performance remains reaching the semi-finals of the Europa League in 2017. The player with the most appearances in the club’s history is Manolo, with over 500 matches for Celta. The club’s top goalscorer is the Spaniard Iago Aspas, who has found the net on numerous occasions whilst wearing the Galician shirt.
