The Argentine club was founded in 1905 by Italian immigrants from the city of Genoa. Based in the working-class neighbourhood of La Boca in Buenos Aires, the club plays at its famous stadium, La Bombonera. In 1908, Boca Juniors made their debut in the second tier of the Argentine Championship but failed to secure promotion to the top flight for several years. It was not until 1913 that Boca Juniors were promoted to the top tier of Argentine football. Since then, the capital city club has never been relegated to the second division. It is the only Argentine club to have achieved this feat. It was not until 1931 that the competition turned professional. Boca Juniors won the first edition of the Argentine professional league. The club repeated this feat in 1934 and 1935. The 1980s marked a turning point for the club with the arrival of a young prodigy. Indeed, Diego Maradona joined the club and went on to secure Boca Juniors’ fifteenth Argentine league title. Unfortunately for the fans, Maradona was transferred shortly afterwards to FC Barcelona for a record fee at the time. He went on to finish out the twilight of his career at his beloved club between 1995 and 1997.

Among these honours, the club has won six Copa Libertadores and three Intercontinental Cups. The club’s all-time leading goalscorer is Martín Palermo, who has scored 236 goals for the Bosteros. The player with the most appearances in the club’s history is the Argentine Roberto Mouzo.
