Founded in 1903 as Athletic Club de Madrid, the club had humble beginnings, playing on a pitch near Puerta de Hierro Park in Madrid. In 1920, the club merged with Aviación Nacional, a team formed by members of the Spanish Air Force, and adopted the name Athletic Aviación de Madrid. Atlético de Madrid’s first major success came in 1939 when it won the Spanish league title. This was closely followed by a series of Spanish Cup victories in the 1950s. In the 1960s, under the guidance of Argentine manager Helenio Herrera, the club enjoyed a golden era, winning two La Liga titles and reaching the European Cup final on two occasions. However, the club failed to win the European title.

Diego Simeone took charge of the club during the 2011–12 season. ‘El Cholo’ then introduced a tactical system based on a rock-solid defence, which enabled the team to play on the counter-attack. It was during the 2013/2014 season that Atlético really made their mark. Indeed, the Colchoneros won the Spanish league title, bringing an end to the duopoly dominated by FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. Unfortunately for the Rojiblancos’ supporters, the club lost the final to their city rivals, Real Madrid.

Atlético is one of Spain’s most successful clubs. It has won 11 Spanish league titles, 10 Copa del Rey trophies and three Europa League titles. Antoine Griezmann is the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 175 goals. Spanish player Koke has made 611 appearances for the Colchoneros, making him the club’s most-capped player of all time.
