The club was founded in March 1874 by members of the Villa Cricket Club who wanted to keep playing sport during the winter. The club grew rapidly and won its first FA Cup in 1887 against West Bromwich Albion. In 1888, Aston Villa was one of the twelve teams to take part in the first English Football Championship. The club finished second in that inaugural season, but went on to prove itself as England’s finest club in the years that followed, winning both the league and the cup on several occasions. After a period of decline, the club returned to the top flight of English football in 1975. Two years later, Aston Villa won the League Cup by beating Everton. It was in 1982 that the club wrote the finest chapter in its history. Although the team was struggling in the league, the manager resigned and was replaced by his assistant, Tony Barton, and the club managed to stay in the top flight of English football. But what truly delighted the supporters was their European adventure in the European Cup. Facing Bayern Munich in the final, the English club won by a single goal and thus became, at the time, the fourth English club to win the European Cup after Manchester United, Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

The famous English club has one Champions League title, seven Premier League titles and seven FA Cups to its name. The club’s all-time leading goalscorer is the Englishman Billy Walker with 244 goals. The player with the most appearances is the Scot Charlie Aitken, who played 660 matches for Aston Villa.
