What to pack for a week’s skiing holiday: a guide to essential clothing and accessories

Are you heading off to the mountains soon and wondering how to pack for a week’s skiing holiday? We’ve put together a comprehensive guide to help you pack without forgetting a thing. Find out now which ski clothes and accessories are essential for a great holiday.

How many layers of ski clothing should you wear on the slopes?

If you’re going skiing for the first time, you’ve no doubt checked the weather forecast. Temperatures in winter sports resorts can easily drop below 0°C. That’s why we recommend packing plenty of warm clothes. To stay warm during your stay in the mountains, there’s a rule to follow: the three-layer rule:

    1. The base layer: thermal underwear
Thermal underwear is an essential item not to be overlooked for a skiing holiday; it wicks away sweat effectively to keep you dry even after hours on the slopes. Opt for technical fabrics such as polyester or merino wool for optimal comfort.

    1. The mid-layer: ski fleece or insulated clothing
To retain body heat effectively, a ski fleece will be your best friend during your week in the mountains. This mid-layer provides extra insulation, which is often much appreciated in sub-zero temperatures. If the weather is forecast to be very cold and windy, add a pair of thermal tights under your ski trousers.

    1. The outer layer: waterproof ski trousers and jacket
The outer layer must be waterproof and breathable to protect you from the cold, snow and damp. Ski trousers and jackets are designed to fulfil three objectives: protection, thermal insulation and breathability. The ideal outfit for hitting the snow-covered slopes.

A ski suit or trousers and a jacket: what should you choose for skiing?

When you’re packing your suitcase for your skiing holiday, bear in mind that you’ll need warm, comfortable clothes – leave the little dresses and your trendy trainers at home. Instead, go for a ski jumpsuit or a pair of ski trousers and a waterproof ski jacket. But which option should you go for? We’re here to help you choose!
Ski trousers and jackets are designed to offer you good protection against the elements thanks to their waterproof and windproof fabrics and technical membranes (Gore-Tex). With a ski outfit, you’ll enjoy greater freedom of movement! Ski trousers are breathable and sometimes feature useful details: reinforced knees and seat, multiple pockets, snow gaiters… The main drawback of a ski set is the risk of snow getting in.
A ski jumpsuit, on the other hand, offers full protection against snow and the cold. It has a thermal lining to keep you warm all over. However, it’s less practical for toilet breaks.

💡 Handy tip: For adults, the trousers-and-jacket set is often preferred for its flexibility. On the other hand, ski overalls are perfect for children.

You could also opt for ski overtrousers, which provide greater coverage of the torso and stay in place better thanks to their adjustable braces. They prevent snow from getting in and keep you warmer thanks to their high-cut design, whilst offering comfort and a perfect fit.

What are the essential ski accessories?

To make the most of your days on the slopes, there are a few essential ski accessories you should pack in your suitcase.
    1. Ski gloves to protect your hands from the cold and damp.
    2. A ski hat or balaclava to keep your head warm (a thermal neck warmer is recommended to cover your face)
    3. A ski helmet, essential for safety on the slopes (ski helmets with visors are very popular)
    4. Ski goggles to protect your eyes from UV rays, wind and snow. They improve visibility in all conditions.
    5. Thermal socks: just like thermal underwear, socks are essential for keeping your feet warm.
    6. A small first-aid kit containing SPF 50 sun cream and lip balm with sun protection.

To sum up, your ski bag should contain:
